Science & Music Theater Day Camp for Kids

For Students ages 12–18

Growing Wise is a four-day day camp for students ages 12-18 focused on nature and science as the basis for a master class and group project in musical storytelling. Developed by Peter Michael von der Nahmer for his 2016 McKnight Visiting Composer residency in New Ulm, this program for youth celebrates and supports the exploration of knowledge and investment in the world through the creation of transformative theater. At the end of the four days students will present their compositions to a general audience of parents and youth drawn from the area.

Drawing inspiration from nature, students will collaborate on group projects:

•Creating a short film of the natural world and composing the score•

•Writing a short music theater piece about the natural world•

•Creating an audio collage using captured sounds in nature•

•Creating a short audio play with original music•

 

Each day of the camp, students will:

9 am to noon — Hike through Flandrau State Park for an active and in-depth exploration of native species with the DNR’s Megan Benage and educator Anita Prestidge

noon to 1 pm — Enjoy the packed lunch they have brought from home

1 pm to 3 pm — Work together on group projects in a Master Class led by Peter Michael von der Nahmer and Anita Prestidge
